Fatality alert: Dragline and operator drown in 25 feet of water
The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has issued a fatality alert after a dragline and its operator were found submerged in 25 feet of water.
The MSHA says the quarry worker had been using the dragline to remove material from a pond.
Divers attempted to locate the operator and were able extricate the dragline from the pond after two days.
The victim was recovered from the engine compartment behind the operator's cab.
This is the ninth fatality reported in 2020, and the second classified as machinery, the administration adds.
ACI offers nondestructive testing certification program
The American Concrete Institute (ACI) has launched a program to certify individuals who pass examinations by performing specified nondestructive tests on hardened concrete.
The ACI says the Nondestructive Testing Specialist – Concrete Strength certification program was developed under the guidance of ACI Committee 228 Nondestructive Testing.
This ACI committee identified the need to qualify those practitioners using these test methods in evaluating in-place concrete strength.
CEMEX confirms mothballing of South Ferriby cement plant
CEMEX has confirmed the mothballing of its South Ferriby cement plant in Barton-upon-Humber, North Lincolnshire, England.
The move follows a period of consultation with employee representatives and the Unite union.
It will affect around 110 employees who are currently based at the plant, and CEMEX anticipates that the majority of redundancies will take place before the end of this month.
