LafargeHolcim to exit Sri Lanka’s cement business

LafargeHolcim is pulling out of Sri Lanka's cement business.

A company spokesperson is reported by national media saying Holcim Lanka will be sold as part of a larger global divestment strategy.

Holcim Lanka owns Sri Lanka’s only integrated plant that produces cement from domestic limestone. The company also has an imported clinker grinding plant, and a bagging plant using foreign-made cement.

Algeria: Gica-Cmbi agreements for two cement projects

Algerian cement firm Gica has reportedly signed two agreements with Chinese company Cmbi, a subsidiary of the Sinoma group.

The agreements will see the building of a new DZD 34 billion (US$308.04 million) 1 million tonnes/year cement plant in Bechar. Operational in 2018, the plant will be held by Société Saoura Ciment (SSC), a Gica subsidiary. US construction equipment exports still in a slump

The first quarter of 2016 marked the 13th consecutive quarter that US construction equipment exports experienced year-over-year declines.
Exports of US-made construction equipment declined 25% overall during the first quarter of 2016 compared to first quarter 2015 with a total US$2.7 billion shipped to global markets.

Shaanxi’s Angola concrete plant plan

The Angolan Technical Department for Private Investment (UTIP) has signed an agreement with Chinese company Shaanxi Aoxinang.

It involves the installation of a concrete production plant in Luanda with an investment estimated at US$1 million (€899,979.11).

It is said that the plant, with a capacity of 40,000m³ of concrete, will initially produce some 21,200m³, and will create 140 jobs.

Nepal seeks cement self-sufficiency

In Nepal, which has 40 cement factories, cement producers are said to be looking at ways of obtaining self-sufficiency.

The producers, seeking help to improve extraction and transport of the necessary raw materials such as better infrastructure and a stable electricity supply, also want to boost exports.

The high cost of limestone imports is said to make cement produced in Nepal uncompetitive compared to Indian products.

Nigerian research on cement for roads

Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, the Nigerian Minister of Science & Technology, says that research is being conducted to look at cement production for use in concrete road construction.

Because of the way some roads constructed, the asphalt used gets damaged, and production of indigenous cement for roads has become a necessity, the Minister is reported as saying.

The government has asked the Nigerian Building & Road Research Institute to start research on concrete.

Algeria to be self-sufficient in cement

The Algerian Minister for Industry and the Mines, Abdessalem Bouchouareb, claims the country will be self-sufficient in cement by the end of 2016.

The country’s cement consumption is now 22 million tonnes, and a number of projects will see the production of an extra 4 million tonnes of cement, which will remove the need for imports.

Five bid for Lafarge’s Indian assets

Lafarge is reported as saying that five bidders have been shortlisted by for the divestment of its assets in India.

By the end of July 2016 it is expected that the bidders will make binding offers for the Lafarge cement facility assets in India at Rajasthan, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal. The facilities have a total annual capacity of 11 million tonnes.

Eugene Group’s Tongyang stake

South Korea’s Eugene Group, which supplies ready mixed concrete, has acquired a stake of just over 10% in rival Tongyang for a reported KRW 97.2 billion (€73.70 million/US$81.89 million).

The acquisition, which makes Eugene the biggest single shareholder in Tongyang, was from Pine Tree Investment and Management, a local private equity company.

Russia sees Q1 cement drop

CMPRO, the Russian Cement Association, is reported as saying that the output of cement in the country has fallen by 18% to 8.86 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2016, compared to the same quarter in 2015.

A reduction in construction is blamed on a drop in an 18% drop in sales of cement.

Dangote’s $100mn Ghana investment

Dangote Cement of Nigeria is reported as planning to spend some US$100 million in Ghana.

SCG looks to supply Giant Sea Wall project

The US $40 billion Giant Sea Wall in the Indonesian capital Jakarta is aimed at improving flood defences and enhancing urban development.

Officially called the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) master plan, the scheme is in the bay north pf the capital.

It is reported that Nantapong Chantrakul, the country director for Siam Cement Group (SCG) Indonesia, says the cement company is looking to supply material to the project, a joint project between Indonesia and the Netherlands.
