Finning launch underground mining solution
Following the launch and integration of its surface mining solution in February 2012, which has already led to deals for six Cat 6030 mining hydraulic excavators, Finning is officially launching its underground mining solution.
Having spent months on integration planning including engineer training, following the Caterpillar acquisition of Bucyrus in 2011, Finning is rolling out the underground mining solution. By extending its dealer coverage to incorporate the whole of the UK and Ireland to support all
Hanson trials ‘rock power’ at Somerset quarry
A stone-powered electricity generator is contributing to the power supply at Hanson’s Whatley quarry in County Somerset, south-west England. Using the same principle as a water wheel, the generator uses the weight of the rock coming off a conveyor belt to produce electricity. The project is the first to be introduced by Hanson’s Renewable Energy Group and is part of the company’s long-term commitment to reducing carbon emissions and energy use.
Martin Crow, head of environment and sustainability, said: “R
Tarmac recycles concrete on M5 contract
Tarmac delivered a major contract on the M5 motorway in the UK after recycling around 30,000tonnes of concrete and providing 8,000m³ of new concrete for new slipform central barrier works. The project was part of an eight-week scheme to install nearly 13km of new concrete safety barrier, and some 30,000tonnes of concrete were excavated and then crushed into Type 1 and 6F5 aggregates at Tarmac’s recycling site in Ettingshall, Wolverhampton. Over 14,000tonnes of the recycled aggregates has already been deploy

Polish quarry provides high quality aggregates
Wakoz's newest quarry is producing top quality aggregates for major road construction work in Gdansk following investment in washing facilities. Claire Symes visited the quarry in Poland to find out more. Visitors arriving at Wakoz Beton's Glazica sand quarry in Poland for the first time may mistake the peacefulness of the site for inactivity and low productivity. However, first perceptions belie the level of activity at the site which is producing high quality
Bauma Equipment Update
The final preparations for Bauma are now underway and ABE takes a look at some of the new equipment that will be launched at the show. With more floor space than ever before, the 2010 edition of Bauma looks set to be the biggest yet in terms of the number of new products on display. Work on placing the new equipment from the 3002 exhibitors on the 555,000m2 showground is now reaching the final stages.
Bulgarian quarry broadens aggregate offering
Investment at Holcim's Chepintsi Quarry in Bulgaria is not only increasing production, it is also adding new products to the offering. Claire Symes reports. Countries that have recently joined the European Union are in real need of investment in infrastructure to bring them in line with standards common in more established member nations. Bulgaria is no different and to deliver the materials necessary for this infrastructure upgrade, the local quarries also need to undergo a step change to meet demand.
Big increase in water recycling
The inclusion of water recycling equipment on washing plant installations has risen dramatically in recent times as operators realise that in addition to the altruistic benefit of protecting the world’s most precious natural resource there are significant efficiency gains to be enjoyed. The specification of equipment such as thickeners and filter presses has seemingly progressed from being seen as something that was done only at the behest of planning authorities, says CDE.
Water treatment leads to consent for Irish quarry
Balancing efficient processing of available resources with environmental issues is a challenge but it is one that quarry in Ireland has achieved through water treatment. Difficulties in gaining consent to open new quarries in Europe means that operators are now looking to process material that was once considered too 'difficult' to turn into saleable aggregates. Processing such materials usually calls for more aggressive screening and washing but the environmental impact of these added processes needs to be
Reprocessing overburden leads to increased product
Reprocessing overburden into a saleable product is helping to increase revenue and reduce storage issue in some European quarries. Many quarries have significantly more overburden than can readily be used for landscaping or for restoration purposes. But stockpiling material on site can block access to reserves, while dumping it elsewhere can be costly, which is why some quarries are investing in a bid to reuse this 'waste' material.

Taking it to the max
Ireland-based CDE Global has added the Rotomax RX150 logwasher to its product range to offer improved levels of attrition for washing applications. The company has said the RX150 is the most significant development since the first Rotomax model was launched in 2003 due to the improvements in the shaft and paddle designs. The paddles are constructed from high chrome cast iron - the same specification of material as used in impactor crushers and far exceeds the specification of paddles within other logwashers
Water filtration systems from Wier, Fraccaroliand CDE
Water filtration systems from Wier, Fraccaroliand CDESuppliers of water filtration and recovery equipment are installing ever more sophisticated plants and there is more to come as a number of factors drive forward technological developments. Jon Masters reports If there is a standout characteristic of water treatment to be observed in aggregates sectors, it is its very bespoke nature of a highly variable kit of parts. This may sound like stating the obvious, but there is a direct relevance to this in how d
Gleeson hosts CDE open day
Quarry operators had the chance to see the benefits of washing crusher dust first hand during an open day held by CDE at Ireland-based Gleeson Quarries’ Laffansbridge site. Visitors to the County Tipparary quarry had the chance to see CDE’s new M2500 mobile washing plant in action. “The material we are washing at Gleeson Quarries was previously being stockpiled as a waste material as a result of the inherent levels of silts and clays,” explained CDE sales manager for Ireland Eunan Kelly. “The washing plant
CDE delivers JPE recycling boost
CDE has announced that it has signed a deal with UK-based JPE Aggregates for a new waste recycling plant to boost waste recovery at its Elford Quarry in Staffordshire. According to JPE, the decision was based on securing a plant which would most effectively clean the recycled material, accommodate the capacity requirements for the washing plant and offer a low cost per tonne over the life of the plant. The new recycling plant for JPE Aggregates includes an M2500 E3 mobile washing plant, AggMax 150R attritio
